City on a Hill was founded in 1995 by a group of teachers that identified the need for policy change at the school level by focusing on academic achievement citizenship teacher uShip and public accountability City on the hill students are prepared for college and to advance Community culture, and to compete in the 21st century show me who believes first and foremost not list of all students can learn but that all students must learn in order to address the social economic and political inequities of our nation one of the first set of charter schools who received the Charter in the state of Massachusetts city on a hill was originally located in the YMCA on Huntington Ave and in 2011 City on the hill boots with current location 58 circuit Street in Roxbury first time City on a Hill had their own building City on a Hill Charter Public School is a College Preparatory High School located in the city of Boston city on a hill is tuition free and open to all students we strive at city on a hill to cultivate a school Community where our students their identities are celebrated and reflected in the staff that work to empower them we are glad to see you all and welcome to city on a hill welcome to a typical classroom at city on a hill students who attend have access to a variation of English History math Public Service science and foreign language classes addition students are given opportunities to complete dual enrollment classes at a variety of University Partners allowed to earn credit at both city until we believe that students who are eligible special needs Services can learn and Achieve at 11 commensurate with their potential when they're given the appropriate supports we also believe that challenge is a necessary part of learning we strive to balance that necessary challenge the appropriate support the broad goal of the Learning Network program is to help our students meet the expectations City on a Hill has for every student while we acknowledge understand and respect the reality of all disabilities we see to equip each student with strategies and work habits that will maximize their academic success in high school and Beyond to support our students in college and Beyond the school has an on-site College in counselor video to help prepare students to select and succeed in a promising post high school placement students practice standardized testing visit colleges participate in required college prep classes and get one guidance and they're planning schedules as many trips as possible to visit colleges universities and college fairs the student experience at city on a hill is also supported by a every city on a hill student is a member of an Advisory Group that means Monday through Thursday and once on Friday there are three purposes of advisory at city on a hill number one advocacy advisors no students and are the students Advocate at the school in the link between the family and City on a Hill number to academic advising and monitoring advisors monitor student academic progress and advise him about how to make good how to make choices number three three pillars of the mission academic performance leadership and citizenship advisors prepare students to demonstrate Proficiency in these three areas another large part of City on a Hill students academic experience is Town Hall town hall is a place for inspirational moments celebration and community-building most but not all town meeting also have a debate that follows the additional Robert's Rules of Order members of the community debate sides of a resolution and offer evidence to support their position with adult support students prepare lead and participate in an all-school in addition to rigorous academic cityonahill provide students with other on-site Services students at city on a hill complete all state-mandated medical screenings including eyes teeth posture and hair Mental Health Counselors are available to meet with students and families and to make referrals for regular Counseling Services when On Site Services cannot treat a child's medical needs we were first students to community partner cityonahill offers a holistic student experience by housing a variety of sports and extracurriculars throughout the school year Sports opportunities for all students to join some examples of the team's you could be a part of our basketball soccer softball Dance cheerleading step in flag football but extracurricular don't stop there from National Honor Society to a video offers more than enough opportunities for students with diverse interests to get involved thank you for taking the time to come visit us virtually at City on we look forward to you joining our city on a hill family incoming students can apply at Boston charters.com
