Letter to CoaH Circuit Street Families – January 8, 2019

January 8, 2019

Dear Circuit Street Families:

Happy New Year! In an ongoing effort to keep you informed about your student’s education at Circuit Street, we are writing with important updates including: (1) midterms are scheduled for the week of January 14; (2) the new cell phone policy takes effect on Tuesday, January 8; (3) we have a new vice-principal, Dr. Valverde; and (4) families are invited to participate in the principal selection process later this month.

Midterms are January 14-18, 2019

Beginning Monday, January 14, there will be a two-hour written exam each morning from 8-10 a.m. Students are dismissed for the day at 10 a.m. unless they have an Oral Proficiency (OP) scheduled for later that day. Please note that OPs are scheduled on an individual basis and do not happen in each class. Each student has received his or her individual OP schedule well in advance of their midterm. Should your student have an OP, please be sure to double-check their schedule and help them to arrive back to school at least 20 minutes in advance of the OP. Students missing an OP exam will receive a zero.

New Cell Phone Policy Takes Effect on Tuesday, January 8, 2019
Students voted in Town Meeting in late-November to implement a new cell phone policy which goes into effect on Tuesday, January 8. As of this date, students are now allowed to use their cell phones ONLY during breakfast and lunch and ONLY in the Forum.

If a teacher sees or hears a cell phone outside of the Forum, or outside of breakfast and lunch time, they will confiscate it. The consequences are as follows:

  • The first time the phone is taken and given to the deans, student will receive the phone back at the end of the day
  • The second time the phone is taken, the deans will hold the cell phone until a parent or guardian comes to pick it up
  • The third time the phone is taken, the deans will hold the cell phone until a parent or guardian comes to pick it up AND the student will lose their cell phone privileges (i.e., the student may no longer use their cell phone in the Forum during breakfast and lunch)
  • Please note: students’ refusal to hand over their phone will result in them being sent to the dean

This policy has been reviewed with students and staff and we expect these rules to be followed with fidelity.

Welcome Vice-Principal Dr. Luz Valverde

After a thorough search process which included students and staff, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Luz Valverde has joined the Circuit Street team as vice-principal on Friday, January 4. A former teacher, school administrator and acting principal, Dr. Valverde brings a wealth of experience to the role. Most recently, she was assistant principal at Randolph High School and assistant principal at Andover High School before that. Her undergraduate and doctorate degrees, in human services and education, respectively, are from University of Massachusetts – Boston. Her master’s degrees in education and education administration, respectively, are from Eastern Nazarene College.

Interim Vice-Principal Lauren Chrystal will resume her responsibilities as Director of Special Education and will work closely with Dr. Valverde.

Families Can Participate in Principal Search the Week of January 14

A thorough search process has yielded three qualified candidates for the permanent principal role. Staff, students (at least one per grade) and families (at least one per grade) will have an opportunity to meet with the candidates the week of January 14, 2019. Should you or your student be interested in joining the interviews, please email Sonya Pratt, Chief Schools Officer, by 5 p.m. on Friday, January 11 at spratt@cityonahill.org. Our goal is to make an offer to the final candidate before the MLK Holiday and for a new principal to be in place by Monday, February 4.

Please remember the next Family Council meeting is planned for Saturday, February 2 at 10 a.m. and the next Circuit Street “Family Meeting” with Kevin Taylor, CEO, is on Tuesday, March 19 at 6 p.m.

Thank you for your time and attention to these matters. Should you have any questions, please contact Ms. Jean-Charles in the front office.
