Dear CoaH New Bedford Families:
I am writing to follow-up on my January and June 2019 letters where I notified the City on a Hill New Bedford Community that the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education (BESE) voted that City on a Hill New Bedford (CoaH NB) be renewed and placed on probation with conditions.
At its meeting on November, 25, 2019, the Board of Trustees of City on a Hill Charter Public School New Bedford adopted the following resolution:
“That the Board of Trustees of COAH New Bedford not renew the COAH New Bedford Charter and that the COAH New Bedford Charter be surrendered to the Commonwealth effective June 30, 2020.”
This was an incredibly difficult decision for our Board to make. This past year, our CoaH NB scholars, staff, and community members have made every effort to meet or exceed our probation conditions. It is with a heavy heart that I must say that we have not succeeded. Moreover, ongoing declines in student enrollment have put a great degree of financial strain on our school, necessitating ongoing staffing and operational cuts.
What this means is that CoaH NB will close on the last day of school in 2020. Our school will continue to operate and serve current students through the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, with the last day of instruction expected to take place on June 18, 2020, unless there are additional snow days that would extend the school year. Please know that we are fully committed to finishing the year strong and to helping every family transition to a new school for the 2020-2021 school year.
As a reminder from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, under Massachusetts law, it is mandatory that your child be enrolled in either the public school of your district of residence or in a private school approved by the district in which it is located. In the coming weeks, we will send out enrollment information for certain local charter schools, parochial schools, and New Bedford Public Schools. For those wishing to enroll in New Bedford Public Schools (NBPS) following their time at CoaH NB, the NBPS Registrar’s Office can be reached at (508) 997-4511 ext.14601 or by emailing email@example.com.
In addition, a COAH NB staff member will be contacting you to find out what assistance you may need with the process. I encourage you to submit applications for enrollment in as many schools as possible as seats can be competitive. The CoaH team will work tirelessly in partnership with families, New Bedford Public Schools, other New Bedford’s charter public schools, DESE, and community partners to support CoaH NB families in accessing a number of high-quality options for the 2020-21 school year.
In addition, I would like to highlight the following information:
- Cancellation of all summer programs, meaning there will be no Summer School or any other summer programming following the last day of instruction and end-of-year activities.
- Before June 30, 2020, please contact CoaH NB at (508)985-6400 for copies of your child’s records, including a final report card, which can be sent to you and any school you request.
- After June 30, 2020, all student records can be accessed through City on a Hill Charter Public School Circuit Street (CoaH CS). Contact information for CoaH CS is as follows:
- Address: 58 Circuit Street, Roxbury, MA 02119
- Email: firstname.lastname@example.org
- Phone: (617) 445-1515
Furthermore, CoaH NB will provide all students with final report cards and all eligible Seniors will graduate as planned the week of June 8, 2020.
City on a Hill NB will host a Community Meeting on Tuesday, December 3, 2019 at 5PM to which all school stakeholders — including families, students, teachers, community members/partners — are invited, to provide clear information about the school’s current operating status and answer any/all questions related to this process.
I am always available to speak. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly.
Kevin T. Taylor
Chief Executive Officer
